Open Set 2025




Will and Deni McIntyre are a photography and filmmaking team based in western North Carolina. Will produces and also shoots; Deni directs and edits. Together they produced six seasons of the Emmy-nominated PBS series David Holt's State of Music for PBS beginning in 2016. Since 2022 they have co-produced three seasons of My Music with Rhiannon Giddens. Season 3 began airing in May and can also be viewed at PBS.org or via Apple + or Prime.

Jan Balster, director of photography, now works primarily in commercial and documentary filmmaking after fourteen years as a commercial stills photographer. His technical mastery serves his genuine interest in the people and subjects that he photographs. His work has taken him to locations such as India, Scotland, Ireland, Argentina, Aruba, France, Germany, Denmark, and more than forty U.S. states, filming on projects ranging from travel, tourism, and leisure to music documentaries and commercials for Fortune 500 companies. Jan was director of photography for the PBS series David Holt's State of Music and now My Music With Rhiannon Giddens.

Aaron Bittikofer, production audio engineer, is a veteran with thirty years of music experience in the studio and on location, working with commercial and documentary video producers who need high-quality sound on location. Aaron started working on David Holt's State of Music in its second season and now My Music With Rhiannon Giddens. His work has also been heard on Destination America, the DIY Network, Yahoo News! with Katie Kouric, Discovery Channel, and Animal Planet. He is a bassist (upright and electric) who has studied with Carol Kaye and Robbie Link. He studied composing and improvisation with Medeski, Martin, and Wood and studied arranging with Steven Bernstein and Jim Crew. He has released numerous recordings with original music groups.

Adam Pinnell is a gaffer/ lighting technician, key grip, and photo assistant with a 3-ton grip & electric truck and lighting add-ons. He is passionate about the art of lighting and documenting a beautifully lit subject. He worked on David Holt's State of Music and My Music with Rhiannon Giddens as a gaffer and as a stills photographer. Adam is based in Greensboro, NC.

Sara Woodmansee, workshop coordinator, has worked as a line producer on four seasons of David Holt's State of Music and two seasons of My Music with Rhiannon Giddens. She just completed fundraising and assistant production on a short doc called Making Sense Backwards: The Nick Bragg Story, which was a selection for the 2025 River Run Film Festival and will air on PBS in the fall.

Nick Iway is a filmmaker from Asheville who has worked on David Holt’s State of Music as well as My Music with Rhiannon Giddens. He is in the editing phase of a personal film with the working title The Pigeon Life about his passion for keeping and training homing pigeons. He has filmed in London and Paris as well as many locations in the United States.
